The Craftsman 18-inch 42cc Gas Chainsaw is a powerful and reliable tool designed for demanding cutting tasks. This manual covers the 42cc 2-cycle engine model with an 18-inch Oregon bar and chain. It includes essential information on safety, assembly, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and specifications to ensure safe and efficient use.
Safety Information & Warnings
Operating a chainsaw is dangerous. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.
| Hazard | Precaution |
| Kickback | Always hold saw firmly with both hands. Use reduced-kickback chain. Do not cut with tip of bar. |
| Hearing Damage | Wear approved hearing protection at all times during operation. |
| Eye Injury | Always wear safety glasses or a face shield. |
| Fire/Explosion | Refuel in well-ventilated area, with engine off and cool. Wipe up spills. |
| Carbon Monoxide | Operate only in well-ventilated outdoor areas. |
| Vibration | Take frequent breaks to avoid Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). |
| Chain Contact | Keep all body parts away from moving chain. Engage chain brake when not cutting. |
WARNING! Read and understand all instructions before use. Never operate when tired or under the influence. Keep bystanders and pets at a safe distance.

Assembly & Initial Setup
Most units require minimal assembly. Unpack all parts and inspect for damage.
- Attach the Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar onto mounting studs. Loop chain over sprocket and onto bar groove, ensuring cutting teeth face forward on top of bar. Adjust tension.
- Fill Bar & Chain Oil: Use high-quality bar & chain oil. Fill reservoir to full line.
- Check Chain Brake: Pull front hand guard back toward front handle; it should engage the brake band. Push forward to disengage.
- Check All Fasteners: Ensure all nuts, bolts, and screws are tight.
CAUTION! Always wear heavy gloves when handling the chain. The chain is extremely sharp.
Fuel & Oil Mixture
This engine requires a gasoline and 2-cycle oil mixture. Using straight gasoline will destroy the engine.
- Fuel: Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89. Do not use fuel older than 60 days.
- Oil: Use a high-quality 2-cycle engine oil designed for air-cooled engines at a 50:1 ratio.
- Mixing: Add oil to an approved fuel container first, then add gasoline. Shake thoroughly. For 1 gallon of gas, use 2.6 fl oz of oil.
WARNING! Gasoline is highly flammable. Mix outdoors away from sparks or flames. Store fuel in a labeled, approved container.
Starting & Stopping Procedures
Cold Start Procedure:
- Place saw on firm, flat ground. Engage chain brake.
- Move ON/OFF switch to ON (I) position.
- Push primer bulb 5-6 times until fuel is visible.
- Pull choke control to FULL CHOKE position.
- Pull starter rope sharply until engine "pops" (usually 1-3 pulls).
- Move choke to HALF CHOKE position.
- Pull starter rope again until engine starts. Let run for 10 seconds.
- Move choke to RUN position. Squeeze throttle trigger to disengage fast idle.
- Disengage chain brake before cutting.
Warm Start: Follow steps 1-2, then start from HALF CHOKE position.
Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle for 10 seconds, then move ON/OFF switch to OFF (O).
Operation & Cutting Techniques
Proper technique ensures safety and efficiency.
- Stance: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, firm footing. Hold saw close to body.
- Grip: Left hand on front handle, thumb wrapped underneath. Right hand on rear handle, finger on throttle trigger.
- Basic Cut: Let the chain do the work. Apply light downward pressure. Do not force.
- Felling a Tree: Plan escape path. Make notch cut (1/3 of tree diameter), then back cut. Use wedges if needed.
- Limbing: Cut limbs from bottom side of fallen tree. Stand on opposite side of tree from limb being cut.
- Bucking (Cutting to Length): Support log off ground. Cut from top down, avoiding contact with dirt.
Tip: Maintain a sharp chain. A dull chain requires more force, increases kickback risk, and wears the engine.
Chain Maintenance & Sharpening
A sharp chain is critical for safe operation.
- Tension: Check frequently when new, less often after break-in. Chain should be snug against bar but pull freely by hand. Adjust tensioning screw when engine is off and cool.
- Sharpening: Use correct size round file and guide. Maintain factory-filed angles (typically 30°). File all cutters to same length. File depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge.
- Lubrication: Check oil flow before each use. Run saw at high speed (in a safe area) and look for oil sling on ground or bar tip.
CAUTION! Never run the saw without bar and chain oil. It will cause rapid wear and possible seizure.
Routine Maintenance Schedule
| Interval | Task |
| Before Each Use | Check chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Check for loose fasteners. Inspect for damage. |
| Every 5 Hours | Clean air filter. Check spark plug condition. |
| Every 10 Hours | Clean spark arrestor screen in muffler (if equipped). |
| Every 20 Hours | Replace fuel filter in tank. Clean cooling fins. |
| Seasonally/Annually | Replace spark plug. Clean carburetor air intake. Check all fuel lines. |
Storage & Off-Season Care
Proper storage prevents starting problems and corrosion.
- Fuel System: Option A: Run engine until it stops to empty carburetor. Option B: Add fuel stabilizer to fresh fuel, run for 5 minutes to circulate, then store.
- Clean: Thoroughly clean saw of all dirt, sawdust, and resin.
- Chain & Bar: Remove, clean, and soak chain in oil. Clean bar groove and oil holes. Lightly coat bar with oil.
- Storage: Store in a dry, locked place, out of reach of children.
WARNING! Never store saw with fuel in a confined or living space due to fire and fume hazards.
Troubleshooting Guide
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
| Engine will not start | No fuel, flooded, bad spark, switch off | Check fuel, switch ON. Wait if flooded. Check spark plug. |
| Engine starts then dies | Clogged fuel filter, dirty air filter, carb adjustment | Replace fuel filter. Clean air filter. May need carb service. |
| Engine lacks power | Dirty air filter, clogged spark arrestor, dull chain | Clean air filter & spark arrestor. Sharpen chain. |
| Chain does not turn | Chain brake engaged, clutch worn, sprocket damaged | Disengage brake. Inspect clutch drum and sprocket. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose parts, unbalanced chain, damaged bar | Tighten all fasteners. Sharpen chain evenly. Inspect bar. |
| Chain throws oil but doesn't cut | Chain on backwards, extremely dull chain | Reinstall chain with cutters facing forward. Sharpen or replace chain. |
