Safety Information

Read all instructions before use. Wear appropriate safety gear.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, long pants, and sturdy boots.
  2. Clear Work Area: Ensure no people or pets are within 50 feet during operation.
  3. Inspect Before Use: Check for loose parts, damaged chain, or fuel leaks.
  4. Proper Stance: Maintain secure footing and balance; use both hands.
  5. Kickback Awareness: Be aware of kickback zone; do not let bar tip contact objects.

WARNING! Risk of serious injury or death. Do not operate near power lines, on ladders, or in wet conditions. Never operate while fatigued or under the influence.

Assembly Instructions

Unpack and inspect all parts. Assembly requires basic tools (included).

  1. Attach Pole Sections: Extend telescoping pole to desired length; tighten locking collar securely.
  2. Install Bar and Chain: Place bar onto sprocket; fit chain around bar with cutting teeth facing forward; adjust tension.
  3. Fill Oil Reservoir: Use recommended bar and chain oil; fill to indicated level.
  4. Mix Fuel: Prepare 50:1 gas/oil mixture (see Section 6).
  5. Attach Shoulder Strap: Clip strap to designated attachment points.

CAUTION! Ensure all fasteners are tight before operation. Do not force components during assembly.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main controls located on rear handle assembly.

Handle Area: Throttle trigger, throttle lockout, choke lever, primer bulb, stop switch.

Pole Section: Telescoping adjustment collar, oil filler cap, chain tension adjustment screw.

Cutting Head: Guide bar, chain, chain brake (if equipped), sprocket cover.

Operation: Press throttle lockout while squeezing throttle trigger to engage chain. Use choke and primer for cold starts. Stop switch cuts ignition.

Fuel and Oil Mixing

Use fresh unleaded gasoline (87 octane minimum) and high-quality 2-cycle engine oil (ISO-L-EGD or JASO FD).

  1. Mix in approved container: 2.6 fl oz of oil per 1 gallon of gasoline for 50:1 ratio.
  2. Shake container thoroughly before refueling.
  3. Fill fuel tank to 80% capacity to allow for expansion.
  4. Use bar and chain oil in separate reservoir; do not mix with fuel.

Tip: Never use automotive oil, diesel, or old gasoline. Store fuel mix for no more than 30 days.

Starting and Operation

Starting procedure for cold and warm engine.

  1. Cold Start: Place on clear, flat surface. Set stop switch to ON. Press primer bulb 5 times. Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE. Pull starter rope briskly until engine fires (1-3 pulls). Move choke to HALF. Pull starter until engine runs. Allow 30-second warm-up.
  2. Warm Start: Choke OFF. Prime 1-2 times if needed. Pull starter.
  3. Operation: Squeeze throttle lockout and trigger to engage chain. Cut at full throttle. Release trigger to idle chain.
  4. Stopping: Release throttle; allow chain to stop. Move stop switch to OFF.

WARNING! Keep hands and feet away from cutting area. Do not drop-start or modify controls.

Cutting Techniques

For safe and effective trimming.

  1. Planning: Identify branch size, location, and fall path. Clear escape route.
  2. Notching: For larger branches (>3 inches), make top cut first, then undercut to prevent bark tearing.
  3. Cutting: Use steady pressure; let saw do the work. Avoid forcing or twisting bar.
  4. Pole Use: Adjust length for comfortable reach. Keep saw close to body for control.
  5. Kickback Prevention: Do not cut with bar tip. Be aware of branch tension.

CAUTION! Do not cut above shoulder height. Be alert for falling debris.

Maintenance & Storage

Regular maintenance ensures performance and longevity.

Daily: Clean air filter; check chain tension and sharpness; inspect for damage.

Weekly: Clean cooling fins; check spark plug; lubricate adjustment points.

Seasonal: Replace spark plug; clean fuel filter; decarbonize exhaust.

Storage: Run dry of fuel or add stabilizer. Clean entire unit. Store in dry, secure location.

CAUTION! Disconnect spark plug wire before performing maintenance. Use only Craftsman-approved parts.
